It’s easy – just use your phone’s software update application or Nokia Suite to download the update. The whole process should take less than ten minutes, depending on the speed of your connection. You can use:
• a Wi-Fi network that your phone is connected to
• your phone’s cellular data connection
• your PC’s internet connection, using Nokia Suite
If you use your phone’s cellular data connection to update the software, you may have to pay data charges. It’s usually faster and cheaper to use a Wi-Fi network or your PC’s internet connection.
Update via your phone:
For most devices, select Menu > Settings > Phone > Phone updates or Menu > Applications > (Tools >) SW Update. If you don't find the software update application from these menu locations, check the correct one from the user guide.
Update via PC:
Connect your phone to the PC via an USB cable, and start Nokia Suite. Select Tools > Software updates and follow the on screen prompts.
Device software updates from Nokia are free and safe to install.
If you do the update using your phone’s software update application, your personal data like contacts, photos or videos are not affected.
If you update using Nokia Ovi Suite in your PC, you should back up your data before updating. Nokia Ovi Suite prompts you to do this before you start.
It is recommended to check for updates approximately once a month to keep your phone software up-to-date, or fix a potential operation problem you may have. For most devices, you can also set your device to automatically check for updates with the following steps:
Select Menu > Settings > Phone > Phone updates or Menu > Applications > (Tools >) SW Update. If you don't find the "Software update" application from these menu locations, check the correct one from the user guide.
Select Options > Settings > Auto-Check for updates.
Using your device
For most devices, select Menu > Settings > Phone > Phone updates or Menu > Applications > (Tools >) SW Update. If you don't find the "Software update" application from these menu locations, check the correct one from the user guide.
You can also set your device to automatically check for updates by selecting Options > Settings > Auto-Check for updates. With that in place, your phone will automatically check in specified intervals if there's a new software available and prompt you to start the update.
Using your PC
Connect your device to the PC via an USB cable and start Nokia Ovi Suite. Select Tools > Software updates, and it will tell you if a new software is available.
The table below is intended as a guide to help you decide which update method may be best for you: via your phone directly or via PC.
The table assumes that both update methods are applicable, but please note that for technical and other operational reasons, not all software updates are available by both update methods.
| I have ...? | Update method |
| A WiFi enabled device and a WiFi access point | Update using your phone |
| A device with high-use or unrestricted internet/data usage | Update using your phone |
| No WiFi or mobile data plan | Update using Nokia Ovi Suite |
| No PC with Microsoft Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7 | Update using your phone |
| No PC with high-speed internet connection | Update using your phone |
| A PC with Microsoft Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7 and high-speed internet connection | Update using Nokia Ovi Suite |
| No USB cable | Update using your phone or use Nokia Ovi Suite with a cable bought from an official retail store. |
Note: if you use your phone’s cellular data connection to update the software, you may have to pay data charges. It’s usually faster and cheaper to use a Wi-Fi network.
The software update packages and applications provided by Nokia are free and safe to install, but if you update using your phone's internet connection, you may have to pay your mobile network operator for data transfer. Check with your operator for details. To avoid data download costs, you can either use a Wifi (WLAN) network or do the update via your PC, by using Nokia Suite.
Just like a computer, your Nokia phone uses software to run. By making sure you always have the latest version of this software, you get:
To immediately check for an available software update, do either of the following:
This can be fixed by changing the settings in the Assisted GPS server. Do the following steps:
This setting should be set to No, because otherwise if you are in a different network than your home network your phone will not use GPS assistance, which results in a long wait to get a GPS fix.
Application updates are classified as either mandatory (Symbian Anna 1/2), important (Symbian Anna 2/2), or optional (Social, Nokia Store, Angry birds). If those application updates are not done, your experience will not be optimal. Without these updates you'd:
The email attachments can’t be read as Quickoffice/Adobe reader won’t function.
You might see mixed old & new icons in the menu or Homescreen.
No further application updates can be done unless the mandatory Symbian Anna package is installed.
If prompted, use OVI Suite (PC Suite) mode.
You can do this with Nokia Suite by following the steps below.
Note: Before updating, you may like to backup your phone's contents using Nokia Suite. These can be restored once the update is complete.
Nokia aims to have software updates available for every single phone and we share information about the latest software for different models on your local Nokia website (software update section in the support page). To find out if an update is available for you, just
Update availability is influenced by many factors including existing Nokia device firmware version, country, and operator. It may be due to one of these variables, that there currently is no new firmware update available for your phone. For example if your mobile service provider hasn't approved the latest Nokia device firmware, it isn't available for that specific operator variant you are using but it can be available for a generic country version your friend is using.
New firmware may become available later, so it's best to setup your device in a way that it automatically informs you when a new software version is available. You can do this in the following way:
Update via PC:
It is not recommended, but calls can be made and received while the software is being downloaded, but note that the call will be terminated automatically when the update phase begins.
Update over-the-air:
During the installation process your Nokia device is not operational: you cannot send or receive calls or messages, perform any other phone functions, or stop the installation process.
No. A software update will only update the device according to your Product Code. For example if you have a specific service provider or operator software version, then the update you receive will be for the same service provider software. Neither an update over the air (via your phone) nor via PC can be used to change the product code, and therefore it is not possible to update a specific service provider's software version to a generic Nokia software version or another operator software version.
Using your PC to update
Using your device to update
Just like a computer, your Nokia phone uses software to run. By making sure you always have the latest version of this software, you get:
• performance improvements to things like battery life and applications
• new and improved functions
• the latest versions of Nokia apps and services
• bug fixes
A software update therefore improves the operating system of your phone. Additionally you can also update Nokia services on a regular basis (like Maps, OviStore, Social Client, etc.).
Will it affect my contacts or other phone data?
Updating using your phone’s software update application won’t affect contacts, photos or other information you’ve stored on your phone. However, if you update using Nokia Ovi Suite, you should back up your data before updating. Nokia Ovi Suite prompts you to do this before you start.
How does the update work?
It’s easy – just use your phone’s software update application or Nokia Ovi Suite to download the update, then restart your phone. The whole process should take less than ten minutes, depending on the speed of your connection.
You can use:
• a Wi-Fi network that your phone is connected to
• your phone’s cellular data connection
• your PC’s internet connection, using Nokia Ovi Suite
If you use your phone’s cellular data connection to update the software, you may have to pay data charges. It’s usually faster and cheaper to use a Wi-Fi network or your PC’s internet connection.
This update method works for updating both the operating system of your phone as well as native Nokia services like Maps, OviStore or Social Client. If you want to update third party applications you have downloaded via OviStore, you need to use OviStore for this.
Note: Updating your device software will not affect your Nokia device's network lock (also known as SIM lock) status.
Note: Nokia device software cannot be downgraded. Once you have upgraded your device, you will not be able to restore it to the earlier version.
Note: Using your device or Ovi Suite to update software will not invalidate your warranty. Nokia’s standard warranty terms and conditions apply.
To see the currently supported devices, go to your local Nokia website's support page (software update section). If your Nokia device is not listed, check back as new products are added regularly.
This depends on the method you use, i.e. whether you do the update via your device or via PC and how many new features are added into the software package.
For an update using your device the downloaded data will be between 2-5MB (for a low end phone) and between 5-10MB (for a smartphone). For updates via the PC the download size will be around 80MB.
You can do this with the software update application on your device. For most devices, you will find this application under Menu > Settings > Phone > Phone updates or Menu > Applications > (Tools >) SW Update. If you don't find the software update application from these menu locations, check the correct location from the user guide.
Note: You can also set your device to automatically check for updates by selecting Options > Settings > Auto-Check for updates. With that in place, your phone will automatically check in specified intervals if there's a new software available and prompt you to start the update.
It is strongly recommended that you connect your Nokia device directly to your PC (using one of the built-in USB ports) rather than use a USB hub or docking station USB port.
