FAQ

Answers to important questions about   Nokia products

  • How can I prolong my battery life on my Nokia phone?

Use the following guidelines to increase your battery life time:

  • Turn Bluetooth off when you do not need it.
  • Specify that your Nokia phone does not scan, or scans less often, for available Wireless LAN (WLAN) networks in the backround when you do not need WLAN connections (to turn off scanning, disable Show WLAN availability in Wireless LAN settings).
  • If you have set Packet data connection to When available in connection settings, and there is no packet data coverage (GPRS), your Nokia phone periodically tries to establish a packet data connection. To prolong the operating time of your Nokia phone, select Packet data connection > When needed.
  • The Maps application downloads new map information when you scroll to new areas on the map, which increases the demand on battery power. Prevent the automatic download of new maps.
  • If the signal strength of the cellular network varies much in your area, your Nokia phone must scan for the available network repeatedly. This increases the demand on battery power.  If the Network mode is set to dual mode in the network settings, the Nokia phone searches for the UMTS network. To use only the GSM network, select Network mode > GSM
  • The backlight of the display increases the demand on battery power. In the display settings, you can change the time-out after which the backlight is switched off, and adjust the light sensor that observes lighting conditions and adjusts the display brightness.
  • Leaving applications running in the background increases the demand on battery power. Close application you do not use.
  • Turn off vibrate function of your Nokia phone, using just the ring tone.
  • Avoid using moving or animated pictures or videos for your Nokia phone's background.
  • Turn off your Nokia phone whenever you do not plan to answer any calls, for example while you are sleeping.
  • Make sure your phone is running the latest software. For downloads and assistance, go to your local Nokia website's support page.

If the battery loses the power fast even though there is no features consuming the power, the battery may be wearing out and you need to replace it with a new one.

  • What should I do if my phone does not power on or keeps switching off on its own?
If your phone appears to have problems with power, the problem may be with the phone, the battery, or the charger. Before bringing your phone into a Nokia Care point for inspection, please perform the following checks:
  • Fully charge the battery of your phone.
  • Restart your phone.
    • For phones with removable battery do the following:
      1. Switch your phone off

      3. After a few seconds, put the battery in and switch your phone on.
    • For phones with non-removable battery do the following:
      1. Press and hold the power button until the phone switches off.
      2. Switch your phone on again

  • Check that you are using a Nokia battery and charger compatible with your phone model. You can find compatibility information in your user guide.
  • If you have access to another battery and charger of the same type as yours, try substituting them to determine if the issue is with the phone, the battery, or the charger.
  • Make sure your device is running the latest software. For downloads and assistance, go to your local Nokia website's support pages.

If you are unable to test your phone or it still keeps switching off, please bring it to the nearest Nokia Care point for inspection.

  • What should I do if my phone is not ringing for an incoming call?

Try the following troubleshooting tips:

  • Ensure that your phone is on and that there is sufficient signal strength.
    • Signal strength is indicated by the signal indicators at the left side of the phone's display. These indicators move up as the strength of the signal increases and down as the signal decreases.
    • To increase your phone's signal strength, try moving your phone slightly, or move towards a window if you're calling from inside a building.
  • If the phone's profile is set to Silent, Flight, Offline, or any other profile where ringing is silenced, it will not ring. Change the profile to General or Normal as instructed in the user guide. Check also the settings of your active profile, especially Ringing tone, Ringing type and Ringing volume. You may also try another Ringing tone, for example built-in Nokia tune, to rule out possible corruption of a transferred ringing tone.
  • Make sure that call divert is not activated.
  • Check if the headset is attached to your phone. For some phone models, the ring does not come through the speaker, only through the headset.
  • Make sure your device is running the latest software. For downloads and assistance, go to your local Nokia website's support page.
If the problem persists, contact your local Nokia Care Point for inspection.

  • Why are my calls dropped?

Dropped calls or low sound quality during calls can result from low signal strength or momentary gaps in network coverage, either at your end or the other end of the connection.

Check the following:

  • Check the signal strength that is indicated by the signal indicators at the left side of the Nokia phone's display. These indicators move up as the strength of the signal increases and down as the signal decreases. If there is no network coverage at all, check if you have set your device to use 3G (UMTS) instead of the dual mode.
  • To increase your Nokia phone's signal strength, try moving your Nokia phone slightly, or move towards a window if you're calling from inside a building.
  • If you continuously experience low signal strength in a certain area, it may be that network coverage is insufficient there. Your operator or service provider can provide you with more information on network coverage.
  • If you believe that the problem may be with your Nokia phone instead of the network, contact your local Nokia Care point for inspection.

  • Why is my phone taking such a long time to charge?

Charging times differ between charging models. USB charging is limited by the maximum current output of the USB device, and may take longer than charging with conventional chargers.

However, if your phone clearly seems to be taking too long to charge, please bring the device and the charger to your local Nokia Care Point for inspection.

Note: all batteries including high-quality batteries like Nokia's will eventually lose power retention capacity. If it is time to replace your battery with a new one, be sure to purchase an original Nokia battery from an authorized Nokia dealer.

  • Why doesn't the audio work in both earpieces (Right/Left) while on an active call?

Both earpieces (Right/Left) are used when the Bluetooth Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP) is activated when listening to music or watching a video. When you make a call on your Nokia device while using a Bluetooth headset, the Hands-Free (HFP) or Headset (HSP) profile would be activated. Only the Right earpiece is used at this time.  This is a Nokia safety feature as the headset may be used in a vehicle as a Hands-Free device. This allows the user to still hear the environment around them while on an active call.

  • My Nokia phone displays "SIM card rejected" or "SIM card unaccepted".

These messages may be displayed in the following situations:

  • The SIM card is out of alignment. If the phone has recently been dropped, bumped, or opened, the SIM card may need adjusting. Follow the SIM card installation instructions in your user guide.
  • The PUK (Personal Unblocking Key) code is entered incorrectly multiple times. This can inactivate the SIM card. If inactivation appears to be permanent, contact your operator or service provider for a new SIM card.
  • You have recently changed service providers. In this case, either your SIM card or your phone may be configured for your previous operator and may require reconfiguring. It may also be that your phone is configured so that it cannot be used with a SIM card from a different operator or service provider. Please contact your current operator or service provider for assistance.

If none of the situations above apply and you continue to receive this error message, your SIM card may be damaged. Please contact your operator or service provider. Or alternately, contact your local Nokia Care Point for inspection.

  • Why does my Nokia phone seem warm when in use?

All Nokia phones are tested for heat tolerance in accordance with industry and government standards. All models meet industry standards before they are offered for sale. Only Nokia models that meet heat tolerance standards are on the market.

Many phones may seem warm to the user, like most battery-powered devices during excessive use. Higher level phones such as 3G phones, or phones operated in many modes at the same time, such as phone, internet and GSM, will seem warm to the user. Warming may also happen during charging or when listening to music for a longer time, for example. Certain phones only used in talk mode may also seem warm to the individual user.

However, the heat level on all Nokia models is within the safe range. The phone does not require repair since it is operating safely in the manner designed to operate.
